Our Story

Our History

The Assemblies of God Bible College began in 1945 as the West Indies Bible Institute in Spanish Town but only existed for two years before coming to a standstill.  In the late fifties, it was moved to Chapelton, Clarendon under the name Central Bible Institute.  During this time, Rev. and Mrs Edwin Foster, Rev. Mildred Werdenie, Rev. C. Huckerby, and Rev. Astley Williams served as lecturers.

In the early 1970s the Bible College was closed and the land sold to the government.  It was relocated to Kingston and again changed its name to the Assemblies of God Institute of Theology and Art. The college operated for a period of time before it closed later in the seventies.

In 1984, the college reopened in Montego Bay, conducting classes from the facilities of Faith Temple Assembly of God.  In 1985, opportunity arose to purchase land in Christiana, Manchester, and the college moved to its present location.  Again the name of the college was changed, this time to The Assemblies of God Bible College.

Rev. Leslie Bartley, a missionary from the USA served as the director until 1987 when Veron Kinkead assumed leadership as director. Under Veron Kinkead’s tenure, the old building was renovated.  A multi-purpose building was constructed which now accommodates the administrative offices, library, classrooms, sanctuary and conference facilities including dorms and a kitchen.   A new director’s house was completed (which currently is occupied by the academic dean).  The plans for a new dormitory and classrooms were drawn.

In addition to the fulltime training offered, throughout its history, the college has operated extensions on schools at various points of its existence.  Presently there are three extensions schools across the Island, one in Kingston (at the Assemblies of God Head Office) and two in Westmoreland (Savanna-la-Mar and Delveland).

Message from the Director

Education is the development of character or mental powers. In advocating sound education as well as spiritual maturity for believers, the apostle Paul writes, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2Tim. 3:15 KJV) This world is ever changing in its thinking and conduct. The church must therefore be concerned with having a sound understanding of the divine message of God’s Word. It must be able to effectively communicate and defend it, and in so doing show itself to be pertinent to the times in which we live. By the power of God, through the enabling of the Holy Spirit, the Assemblies of God Bible College is committed to providing a high standard of sound theological training for Christians who are called into ministry to impact the world in this twenty first century. We understand that the future belongs to those who are able to maximise opportunities. Therefore, the goal of the Assemblies of God Bible College is to equip men and women for “Ministry” and develop the whole person.

Message from the Academic Dean

The Assemblies of God Bible College which was established in 1985 on its present site at Christiana has continued to prepare students for Bible-based Ministry. The college is determined to advance the Kingdom of God on earth and thereby fulfil our God-given mandate. Over the years, the institution has charted the way forward for students to be facilitated in a residential environment where they would be enabled to seek after God in a serene and engaging atmosphere. Although the residency has not had numerical growth in recent years, and there has been a shift to online teaching and learning, the facility is still the ideal place for controlled learning and for fostering the discipline required for absorbing the Word of God and building an intimate relationship with Him. The residential campus is the place to be for training and spiritual development. It provides an affordable space and a staff complement willing to build individuals who will keep God as their central focus in all their endeavours. Make The Assemblies of God Bible College your institution of choice. God bless you.
